1. Parlami un po di te… chi sei, dove vivi, quanti anni hai e gli studi che hai fatto…

1. Tell me something about yourself… Who are you, where do you live, how old are you, what did you study (at university)?

Il mio nome è Arianna van Dievoet e ho 26 anni. Originaria del Belgio, attualmente vivo a New York City. Ho una laurea specialistica in Interior & Spatial Design presso il Chelsea College of Art & Design. Per la mia laurea, mi sono trasferita a Providence, RI (vicino a Boston) per studiare Architettura degli Interni presso la Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Mi sono laureata la scorsa estate e dopo mi sono trasferita a New York.

My name is Ariane van Dievoet and I am 26. Originally from Belgium, I currently live in New York City. I hold a BA (Hons) in Interior & Spatial Design from the Chelsea College of Art & Design. For my masters degree, I moved to Providence, RI (near Boston) to study Interior Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). I graduated last summer and that’s when I moved to NYC.

2. Cos’è per te il design?

2. What does design mean to you?

Per me, essere un designer oggi significa essere versatile nella ricerca di soluzioni, attraversando i confini tra le diverse discipline e alla ricerca di nuove sfide. Disegnare spazi ed esperienze, qualunque sia la scala, mescolando diverse studi e pratiche.

To me, being a designer today means being versatile in finding solutions, crossing the boundaries between the different disciplines and looking for new challenges. I design spaces and experiences, whatever the scale, mixing different media and practices.

3. Qual’è la tua filosofia per la progettazione degli oggetti?

3. Do you have a personal design philosophy? How would you describe it?

Io disegno in primo luogo per le persone che cambiano frequentemente appartamenti, pur avendo per sfruttato al meglio uno spazio ridotto.
I miei pezzi sono destinati a crescere con lo spazio, e adattarsi al vostro stile di vita. Modulari, possono essere combinati e ri-organizzati, insieme a cambiamenti del modo di pensare del loro proprietario.
Questo deriva dalla mia riflessione sul rapporto tra il valore e la durata delle cose che possediamo. Il mio scopo è quello di progettare oggetti il cui valore rimanga nei materiali e la capacità di evolvere con il tempo. Si tratta di incoraggiare i giovani nomadi urbani ad investire in piccoli pezzi durevoli che dureranno più a lungo.
Per Consentire il movimento e la creatività, mi propongo di offrire un introito giocoso sul design responsabile.

I design primarily for people who change apartments frequently, while having to make the most of a reduced space.
My pieces are meant to grow with the space, and adapt to your lifestyle. Modular, they can be combined and re-organized, along with their owner’s changes of space and mind set.
This comes from my reflection on the relationship between the value and the durability of the things we own. My aim is to design objects whose value lay both in the materials and the ability to evolve with time. It is to encourage young urban nomads to invest in small durable pieces that they will keep longer.
Allowing for movement and creativity, I aim to offer a playful take on responsible design.

4. Quali sono i materiali che preferisci?

4. Which materials do you use the most in your projects?

Io tendo ad usare un sacco di legno nei miei progetti, in quanto è un materiale molto nobile e indulgente. Tuttavia, ho una passione per l’apprendimentodi tutti i giorni, e ho fame di esplorare materiali e tecniche diverse.

I tend to use a lot of wood in my designs, as it is a very noble and forgiving material. However, I have a passion for learning more everyday, and I yearn to explore different materials and techniques.

5. Tell me something about the objects you have sent me…

Cerco di creare prodotti di qualità che non siano solo di lunga durata, ma anche modulari e versatili. I pezzi si adattano e si evolvono con il vostro interno, ed è possibile riorganizzarli ogni volta che si desidera. Spesso consentono per usi diversi, che li rende perfetti per i piccoli spazi. Ad esempio, sgabelli che si trasformano in banchi, ma possono anche essere utilizzati come tavolini.

I try to create quality products that are not only long-lasting, but also modulable and versatile. The pieces adapt and evolve with your interior, and you can rearrange them whenever as you wish. They often allow for different uses, making them perfect for small spaces. For example, stools turn into benches but can also be used as side tables.

6. Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

6. Do you already have any project for the future?

Sarò in alcune mostre a New York durante NYCxDesign (maggio). Sto anche preparando per Tent London a settembre e una mostra personale durante la Design September* a Bruxelles.

I will be in a few different show in NYC during NYCxDesign (May). I am also getting ready for Tent London in September and a solo show* during Design September in Brussels.

7. Quale oggetto del passato ti piacerebbe aver progettato?

7. Is there an object of the past that you wish you had designed?

Blocchi della Lego, in quanto consentono di creatività infinita e il gioco. Sono anche senza tempo e hanno attraversato generazioni di bambini.

Lego blocks, because they allow for endless creativity and play. They are also timeless and have crossed generations of kids.

8. Alla premazione degli Oscar Paolo Sorrentino ha citato il suo Pantheon di personaggi che hanno ispirato la sua vita, fra i quali Fellini e Maradona. Tu chi inseriresti nel tuo Pantheon?

8. Paolo Sorrentino during his ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Acceptance speech appointed Fellini, Madonna and Scorsese as their inspirers. Do you have any? Who are they?

Charles e Ray Eames per il loro approccio multidisciplinare e giocoso al design. Dieter Rams per la semplicità dei suoi disegni e per il suo ethos.

9. Ritieni che l’autoproduzione dei propri pezzi sia la nuova via per i designers?

9. Do you think that self-production is a new possible way for designers to make their design?

Io credo che sia possibile per un designer produrre tutti i suoi pezzi, ma in termini di tempo e richiede un sacco di investimenti. Credo che il bilanciamento dell’autoproduzione con alcuni prodotti concessi in licenza, sarebbe una buona soluzione.

I believe that it is possible for a designer to produce all of their pieces themselves, but it is also time consuming and requires a lot of investment. I guess balancing self-production and with a few licensed products would be a good solution.

10. Qual’è il tuo rapporto con la cucina? (Hai mai progettato oggetti per la cucina?)

10. Which kind of relationship do you have with the kitchen and cooking? (Have you ever designed kitchen tools?)

Quando cucino – e la progetto – mi piace il contrasto. Mi piace mescolare dolce e salato, dolce e aspro, etc.
Mi piace una cucina organizzata, ma vivo a New York, non ho molto spazio non posso conservare un sacco di cose nei miei mobili da cucina. Questo è ciò che mi ha fatto progettare Steptool, una sottile e pratica scaletta da cucina. Essa si basa sul bancone della cucina come una struttura per consentire di fare un passo su di esso.

When cooking – and designing – I love contrast. I like to mix sweet and salty, sweet and sour, etc.
I like an organized kitchen, but living in NY, I don’t have that much space so I store a lot of stuff really high in my kitchen cabinets. This is what made me design Steptool, a thin and practical kitchen ladder. It rests on the kitchen counter as a structure to allow you to step on it.

Ho un debole per i dolci così mi piace cucinarli. Il mio preferito è il crumble di mele, perché è molto facile da fare, ma sempre un successo! Mi piace il contrasto tra la crosta e le mele morbide. Mi ricorda anche casa.

I have a sweet tooth so I like to bake desserts the most. My favorite one is the apple crumble, because it is very easy to make but always a hit! I love the contrast between the crust and the soft apples. It also reminds me of home.
