From Design to Kitchen incontra: Anna Palomaa

1. Parlami un po di te… chi sei, dove vivi, quanti anni hai e gli studi che hai fatto…

1. Tell me something about yourself… Who are you, where do you live, how old are you, what did you study (at university)?

Il mio nome è Anna Palomaa e vivo e lavoro a Helsinki. Sono nata in Lapponia finlandese 34 anni fa. Il mio paese natale si chiama Kolari. Mi sono laureata alla Scuola di Arte e Design di Helsinki Aalto University nel 2011.

My name is Anna Palomaa and I live and work in Helsinki. I was born in Finnish Lapland 34 years ago. My home village is called Kolari in english crash. I have graduated from the Aalto University School of Art and Design Helsinki in 2011.

3. Qual’è la tua filosofia per la progettazione degli oggetti?

3. Do you have a personal design philosophy? How would you describe it?

Lavoro con un punto di vista nordico. Il mio lavoro è caratterizzato da funzionalità e da un approccio sperimentale. I materiali mi affascinano e mi ispirano, diventando la spina dorsale al mio lavoro di progettazione. Io lavoro con una moltitudine di materiali, che vanno dalla ceramica e legno alla pelle. Ho anche fatto un progetto in cui c’è stato l’uso dello zucchero come materiale di progettazione del prodotto.

I am working from a Nordic point of view. My work is characterized by functionality and experimental approach. Materials fascinate and inspire me and form a backbone to my design work. I work with a vide variety of materials, ranging from ceramic and wood to leather. I have also done a project in which I have been use sugar as product design material.

 

4. Quali sono i materiali che preferisci?

4. Which materials do you use the most in your projects?

Penso di aver risposto a questa domanda in quella precedente. Amo materiali naturali e la mia passione è quello di sviluppare modi nuovi e innovativi per utilizzare materiali per la progettazione del prodotto.

I think the answer to the previous questions regarding to agree to this. I love natural materials and my passion is to develop new and innovative ways to use materials for product design.

 

5. Raccontami brevemente gli oggetti che mi hai inviato…

5. Tell me something about the objects you have sent me…

Kuru (Set da tavola) che ho presentato a Milano 2013 e Harlekiini (lampada), Toini (lampada) e Syli (altalena) che ho presentato il 2014. Il tema principale per il design è stato il circo e le sue forme forme, ai colori e all’atmosfera che si trovano spesso lì. La diversità e contrasti hanno reso il tema interessante e ha dato la libertà di creare oggetti affascinanti, con una storia e un carattere. Il design di Kuru (Set da tavola) si basa sulla cultura del popolo Sami in Lapponia. I Sami usano portare con sé una serie speciale di porcellana da tavola,utilizzata solo per i loro ospiti. I loro articoli per la tavola di tutti i giorni erano fatti di legno. Trovo i manufatti utilizzati dai nomadi particolarmente affascinanti. La loro usabilità versatile è definita come la migliore.

 

Kuru tableware set I presented in Milan 2013 and Harlekiini lamp, Toini lamp and Syli swing I presented 2014 and the main theme for the designs is inspired by circus and the shapes, colours and atmosphere are often found there. The diversity and contrasts made the theme fascinating to work with and it gave a freedom to create enchanting objects with a story and character. The design in Kuru tableware set is based on the culture of the Sami people in Lapland. The Samis used to carry with them a special set of porcelain tableware, which was meant only for their guests. Their everyday tableware was made of wood. I find the artifacts used by nomads especially fascinating. Their versatile usability is refined to the finest.

C’è sempre qualcosa da fare. Al momento sto lavorando con lo zucchero.

There is always something going on. At the moment I am working with sugar.

 

7. Quale oggetto del passato ti piacerebbe aver progettato?

8. Alla premazione degli Oscar Paolo Sorrentino ha citato il suo Pantheon di personaggi che hanno ispirato la sua vita, fra i quali Fellini e Maradona. Tu chi inseriresti nel tuo Pantheon ?

8. Paolo Sorrentino during his ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Acceptance speech appointed Fellini, Madonna and Scorsese as their inspirers. Do you have any? Who are they?

Le persone vicine a me mi ispirano di più.

The people close to me inspire me most.

 

9. Ritieni che l’autoproduzione dei propri pezzi sia la nuova via per i designers?

9. Do you think that self­production is a new possible way for designers to make their design?

Penso che l’auto­produzione è un nuovo modo possibile per i progettisti di far girare il loro design? Io penso che sia una possibilità. Almeno in Finlandia ci sono un paio di aziende interessanti in condotte da giovani designer. Ad esempio & Bross.

I think that it is one possibility. At least in Finland there is a couple of interesting companies running by young designers. For example &Bross.

 

10. Qual’è il tuo rapporto con la cucina? (Hai mai progettato oggetti per la cucina?)

10. Which kind of relation do you have with the kitchen and the cooking? (Have you ever designed kitchen tools?)

Mi piace il cibo, le materie prime gustose, semplici, piatti buoni e preparati, in particolare quando qualcun altro li prepara per me.

I love the tasty, simple, and good raw materials prepared food, especially when someone else prepares it for me.

I gamberi sono il cibo preferito di mio figlio.

My son love shrimps and this is his favorite food.
