1. Tell me something about yourself… Who are you, where do you live, how old are you, what did you study (at university)?

Ciao!

Hello! I’m Federico, I live and work 80% in Milan and 20% in Treviso, I’m 30 years old and I have studied Interior Design at the IED in Milan. After the university, I moved to Paris working for a design firm and 3D visualization. In 2008 I returned to Milan working at Vudafieri Saverino Partners, an architectural firm specializing in retail. After three years I opened my own studio dealing with interiors and product design.

2. Cos’è per te il design?

2. What does design mean to you?

It’s unquestionably a true passion, stories, positive feeling but also balance and elegance. At the same time it is a pleasure that range among the various interior work.

3. Do you have a personal design philosophy? How would you describe it?

Probably being an interior designer, are objects designed to live in spaces, indifferently of the style. I like to reinterpret, starting from a concept and develop it in order to give them functionality.

4. Quali sono i materiali che preferisci?

4. Which materialsdo you use the most in your projects?

Amo tutto ciò che trasmette forte matericità: metallo, legno su tutti.

I love everything that gives strong materiality: metal and wood above all.

5. Tell me something about the objects you have sent me…

Furnishings are born looking and rearranging the industrial furniture; furniture usually used far from “noble” rooms of the house that through the use of quality materials and of great craftsmanship feeling (like leather, brass, wood) assume a new connotation becoming objects to be shown and live. The result of this reasoning, an industrial cart on wheels becomes a sitting, a warehouse shelf turns into operative desk, a ladder in bookcase and a set of industrial elements assumes the function of reading transportable unit. Starting from the latter, the intention was to create a sort of “living cell” dedicated to reading. It’s called library as it contains all its main features: bookshelves, lamp for direct lighting and double seat that’s divided into a chaise lounge and traditional sitting. Itinerant due to the small wheels to be easily moved. The Libreria is the “daughter” of the biblioteca itinerante because it evokes the design. In this case the removable shelves and pins are brass. The scaffale d’arte is an operative desk: Working top, shelves and dedicated lighting. The basic concept of this furniture is the elaboration of the traditional warehouse shelf, embellished here and reinterpreted through the use of brass in the structure and leather bands to hold the wooden shelves. The inspiration for the panchetta comes from the classic industrial cart, revisiting the design and placing over it different upholstery in order to create a seat.

6. Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

6. Do you already have any project for the future?

Parallelamente seguo progetti d’interni.

I’m working on new furniture to show next year. In the meantime, I’m dedicating to the application for upcoming events of design. At the same time I’m doing interior design projects.

7. Quale oggetto del passato ti piacerebbe aver progettato?

7There is an object of the past that you wish you had designed?

There would be many … but when I look at the furniture “Veliero” by Franco Albini I’m always enchanted.

8.Paolo Sorrentino during his ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Acceptance speech appointed Fellini, Madonna and Scorsese as their inspirers. Do you have any? Who are they?

Come ispirazione direi il designer statunitense Wormley; ammiro molto Nendo, i fratelli Bouroullec e Vincenzo De Cotiis, mentre considero estremamente interessante l’approccio lavorativo di Oliviero Toscani.

As inspiration I would say the American designer Wormley; I really admire Nendo, the Bouroullec brothers and Vincenzo De Cotiis, while I consider extremely interesting the working approach of Oliviero Toscani.

9. Do you think that self-production is a new possible way for designers to make their design?

I’m not sure if it is THE new way, but it’s certainly a good way to promote themselves and at the same time learning the various artisans techniques. That’s the thing that I consider most interesting. Encourage the exchange between creativity (designer) and craft workers can only be a growth factor for both. In the past I worked few months welding and bending metal, initially I was not enthusiast of this temporary job but it’s thanks of that experience if I was able to devise the furniture presented to Milan design week.

10. Which kind of relation do you have with the kitchen and the cooking? (Have you ever designed kitchen tools?)

Until twenty years, circa, I always ate the same things; Over time I became curious but not equally capable to cook. Design and kitchen are two worlds much closer than we might think, not just for the constant development of utensils, dishes, pots, etc., but also research and experimentation sees them together. In 2007 I designed a concept kitchen for my thesis in collaboration with Schiffini cucine, associating the actions we take in the kitchen to their characteristic material: cutting and preparing with wood, washing (water) with stone and baking with glass-ceramic (induction) … finally obtaining three matter blocks.

Let’s say that in the background there is always the classic pizza but soon after sea bass with tomatoes and potatoes.

Che aspettiamo allora, iniziamo a cucinare. Ecco la ricetta…

What are we waiting time, begin to cook. Here is the recipe…
