1. Tell me something about yourself… Who are you, where do you live, how old are you, what did you study (at university)?

Ciao, mi chiamo Salvatore Spataro e ho 33 anni. Sono originario di Noto(SR), città che ho lasciato nel 2000 per trasferirmi a Firenze, dove mi sono laureato in Architettura e dove attualmente vivo e lavoro. Svolgo la professione sia autonomamente che in collaborazione con uno studio di architettura specializzato nella progettazione di strutture ricettive e residenze.

Hello, my name is Salvatore Spataro, I’m 33 years old and I was born in Noto, Sicily. In 2000 I moved to Florence, where I took a degree in Architecture and where I currently live and work. I practice both independently and in collaboration with an architectural firm specializing in hotels and residences.

2. Cos’è per te il design?

2. What does design mean to you?

Avendo una formazione da architetto, ho visto sempre il design come una passione parallela. Un modo per confrontarmi con la piccola scala cercando, dove possibile, di trasferire un metodo di lavoro e un linguaggio in parte differente.

Having trained as an architect, design for me has always been a second parallel passion. It is a way to work and study the small scale, trying, where possible, to transfer a working method and a language somewhat different.

3. Qual è la tua filosofia per la progettazione degli oggetti?

3. Do you have a personal design philosophy? How would you describe it?

Mi lascio molto trasportare da sensazioni personali più che da un dovere funzionale o estetico.
Per la collezione che presento in questa occasione ho tentato in ogni fase progettuale di mantenere vivo il ricordo e la storia degli oggetti che ho scelto di reinterpretare e allo stesso tempo mutarne la funzione e la percezione trasformandoli in oggetti contemporanei.
Un approccio misto, dove rispetto per la storia e voglia di innovare si intrecciano..

I prefer to work on personal feelings better than by a functional or aesthetic requirement.
For this collection I tried in every project phase to keep alive the memory and history of the chosen objects and at the same time changing their function and perception transforming them into contemporary objects.
A mixed approach, where respect for history and desire to innovate are intertwined.

4. Quali sono i materiali che preferisci?

4. Which materials do you use the most in your projects?

In questo momento preferisco ceramica, legno, e pietra. Non sono molto affascinato dalla stampa 3d per il design…la sensazione del materiale naturale mi emoziona di più.

I prefer ceramic, wood, and stone. 3d printing for design does not fascinate me at the moment Natural materials excite me more.

5. Raccontami brevemente gli oggetti che mi hai inviato…

5. Tell me something about the objects you have sent me…

Ho inviato 3 oggetti della mia prima collezione autoprodotta, dal titolo “Design Meets Sicily”. Una linea nata con l’obiettivo di reinterpretare in maniera inedita elementi e caratteri della cultura tradizionale siciliana.
Tutti gli oggetti sono realizzati in Italia grazie alla collaborazione di artigiani esperti.
-TRUPPY è il primo oggetto della collezione. E’ una trottola in ceramica colata e smaltata a mano. La classica trottola in legno, “truppietto”, che rappresenta uno dei giochi più amati dai bambini è rivista con uno sguardo contemporaneo.
L’oggetto, che in passato era rustico e imperfetto, ora assume una nuova struttura più elegante e preziosa grazie alla smaltatura lucida. Realizzato in occasione dell’evento Plasma (a cura dell’associazione IMAKE) a luglio 2013 a Firenze e successivamente esposto nel corso di varie manifestazioni regionali e non solo. Presentato durante la Milano Design Week 2014 presso la Design Library all’interno dell’evento Fuori di Design, è stato recentemente selezionato da ChloroSphere per il loro Trend Design Book 2015.
Negli ultimi mesi ho sviluppato anche una versione limitata con finiture in oro e platino.
-LE CAVAGNE LAMPS sono lampade a sospensione in ceramica ispirate alle cavagne, piccoli contenitori in canna e legno di fico che i venditori ambulanti utilizzavano per trasportare la ricotta in Sicilia.
Nell’immaginario collettivo, questi oggetti non sono mai appesi a muro singolarmente, ma a grappoli…da qui l’idea di proporre un corpo illuminante a sospensione e non unico.
-baroqEAT è una collezione di 12 piatti in porcellana decorati attraverso l’affascinante tecnica della decalcomania. Le grafiche raffigurate rappresentano alcune tra le più belle planimetrie di chiese barocche Siciliane a pianta centrale.
Una selezione accurata avvenuta attraverso numerose ricerche in biblioteca e che rappresenta anche un omaggio al patrimonio architettonico di Noto, mia città natale.

I sent three objects that belong to my first self-produced design collection.
A collection conceived with the purpose of reinterpreting in a new way elements and features of the traditional culture of Sicily. A collection entirely produced in Italy.
-Truppy is the first object of the collection.
It is an handmade ceramic object inspired by an old Sicilian toy: the wooden spinning top. The object, which in former times was rustic and imperfect, now takes on a new structure more elegant and precious due to engobe finished and the extraordinary craftsmanship of the artisans.
Made for the first time for the event Plasma ( by association Imake ) in July 2013 in Florence and later shown during a number of events. It was exhibited during Milan Design Week 2014 at the Design Library (Event “fuori di Design”), it was recently selected by ChloroSphere for Their Trend Design Book 2015.
In recent months I have also developed a limited version with gold and platinum finishing.
– Le cavagne lamps are hanging lamps in ceramic inspired by the cavagne, small containers made in cane and fig wood that vendors used to carry the ricotta in Sicily. In the collective imagination, these objects were never hung on the wall individually, but in clusters … so I decided to present a lamp consisting of three units and not single.
– BaroqEAT is a collection of 12 porcelain plates decorated through the fascinating technique of the decal. The graphics represent some of the most beautiful floor plans of Sicilian Baroque churches. A careful selection occurred through extensive research in the library and that is also a tribute to the architectural Heritage of Noto, my hometown.

6. Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

6. Do you already have any project for the future?

Al momento sto lavorando sull’ampliamento di questa collezione e su alcune proposte per aziende toscane. Come già detto precedentemente, essendo una passione più che un lavoro, mi lascio trasportare da stimoli e sensazioni del momento più che da un bisogno professionale.

I’m currently working on increasing this collection and on proposals for some Tuscan companies.
As mentioned previously, for me design is a passion, so I get carried by motivations and sensations of the moment rather than by a professional need.

7. Quale oggetto del passato ti piacerebbe aver progettato?

7. Is there an object of the past that you wish you had designed?

L’oggetto che mi piace di più del passato è sicuramente la Panton Chair del 1967. Credo che difficilmente si riesca a superare l’eleganza e l’armonia di questo oggetto. Puro Design.

Certainly the Panton Chair, 1967. I think it is difficult to outdo the elegance and harmony of this object. Pure design.

8. Alla premiazione degli Oscar Paolo Sorrentino ha citato il suo Pantheon di personaggi che hanno ispirato la sua vita, fra i quali Fellini e Maradona. Tu chi inseriresti nel tuo Pantheon?

8. Paolo Sorrentino during his ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Acceptance speech appointed Fellini, Madonna and Scorsese as their inspirers. Do you have any? Who are they?

In realtà, i miei punti di riferimenti variano in base al periodo che vivo. Possono essere architetti (Piano, Kuma, Ferrater, Foster…), designers (Eames, Grcic, Wanders..)o artisti in generale, ma molto spesso sono luoghi o simboli. L’essere cresciuto in una città fortemente scenografica, ricca di luce e colori caldi credo che possa aver contribuito allo sviluppo di molte ricerche professionali.

My reference points have been changing with my life. They can be architects (Piano, Kuma, Ferrater, Foster …), designers (Eames, Grcic, Wanders ..) or artists in general, but very often they are places or symbols. I grew up in a highly scenic city, full of light and warm colors and I think this may have contributed to the development of much professional research.

9. Ritieni che l’autoproduzione dei propri pezzi sia la nuova via per i designers?

9. Do you think that self-production is a new possible way for designers to make their design?

Credo sia una delle strade percorribili anche se non deve essere l’unica. Ci sono dei vantaggi se si guarda l’autoproduzione come libertà e capacità di seguire autonomamente il processo produttivo dei propri oggetti, ma allo stesso tempo ritengo che il mercato di oggi impone dei ritmi, dei costi e dei tempi che l’autoproduzione fa spesso fatica a rispettare.

I think it is one possible way although it should not be the only one. We benefit if we consider the self-production as the freedom and ability to independently follow the production process of own objects, but at the same time I believe that today the market imposes rhythms, cost and time that it often hard to comply with.

10. Qual è il tuo rapporto con la cucina? (Hai mai progettato oggetti per la cucina?)

10. Which kind of relationship do you have with the kitchen and cooking? (Have you ever designed kitchen tools?)

Mangio. E molto. Quindi il mio rapporto è ottimo se sto seduto a tavola più che ai fornelli.. L’unica cosa al momento progettata per la cucina è la collezione BaroqEAT. Sto lavorando anche ad un set per l’aperitivo ma è ancora in fase di prototipo..

I eat. A lot. So my relationship is great if I’m sitting at the table rather than cooking… At the moment, the only thing that I designed for the kitchen is BaroqEAT collection. I’m also working on a cocktail set but is still at prototype stage..

11. Dimmi qual è la tua ricetta culinaria preferita.

11. Which recipe do you love the most?

Sicuramente un piatto della mia terra. Ne ho tante di ricette preferite…ma per voi ho scelto la parmigiana!

Certainly a course of my region. I like many recipes… but for you I chose the Parmigiana!
